It’s been twenty years since West London techno producer and Continual Records co-founder Tommy Gillard released his last solo record. He’s now back with a bang - and a pretty scary one at that.After spending large parts of the last decade in the studio with fellow UK techno veteran Oliver Ho (better known nowadays as Broken English Club) releasing work as Zov Zov on Ho’s Death & Leisure and the ever reliable Berceuse Heroique, Gillard now joins Interstellar Funk’s Artificial Dance roster as Curved Needle.Opening with the ominous and icey cold title track, Gillard makes it clear straight away he’s not here to make any new friends - he’s out for blood with six bone-rattling slo-mo post-electronic body music exercitions of the bleakest kind. Did anyone say ‘horrorwave’?An aggressive half-speed drum & bass-hoover (think Ed Rush & Optical anno 1997 sawn in half) underlays the dystopic yet blatantly brilliant electro nightmare that is ‘Change-Power’, before things get even more sinister on ‘Sworn in Blood’ and ‘The Blind Leading the Blind’.This may be a tad too slow and low to serve as your average dancefloor fodder, but it’s perfect torture room material. Capturing an incongruous assignment together, these liminal works frame moments of transport between process and material that are otherwise private and archived.

These 7 tracks show the deep connection of Marlene Starks’ work as a writer and an artist to her role as mother and DJ in times when there is an urgent need to dismantle the patriarchy in our society and rave culture. Marlene Stark is telling us much more than a great musical story with the symbolic title “Hyäne". Marlene wants to direct our attention to a reviled creature while she reflects on its literary and symbolic meanings. Although hyenas live in a matriarchal society, its transmutation can be perceived as the ongoing struggle of the non-male body in an androcentric world view. Marlene Starks reinterprets the figure of the hyena in a very poetic, self-ironical and honest way, as shown in the tracks ‘Hungry As a Hunter’, ‘Hyäne’ and ‘Language Of Old Woman’. It’s a neo-ceremonial call to rethink established structures without missing out the turbulent landscape of today’s politics. From early trip-hop to post-rave elements, Stark combines her sonic adventures with an impressively nonchalant and colloquial vocabulary. Her voice, as well as the voice of guest singer Stefanie Mader, achieves a remarkable vocal structure that goes beyond the mainstream. This is the contemporary body music for the next generation.

Ikävä Pii’s vinyl debut is a collection of three original songs, complemented with two recent remixes by Arif and Monty DJ. The three original works (Palau Figment, Rampage and La Conga Di Corto) are some of Ikävä Pii’s early productions – but were recovered in London between 2020 and 2021, to be released on Flippen Disks. Opener Palau Figment is a dive into a non-chronological sonic archive, a reluctant visit of a time past. Its saturated, driving drum machine beat is hesitantly accompanied by floating synthesizer play and takes us right into dream-land, grounded by a mono bass line that throughout the song is joined by a doubling replica in stereo - a memory of itself if you will; A nostalgic narrative told by a hardly comprehensible voice, while “Rampage” does a good job shredding it it right up, exposing the distortion of memory in its growing destruction of it’s driving force, the synthesized string sound that is eventually rendered nearly unrecognizable.This painful process of acknowledgement finds its cathartic reconciliation on the flip. “La Conga di Corto” combines the tropes of the A-side into an ecstatic 5 minutes of loopy, shifty drums and broken up synthesizers. Arif’s Woo Reduction keeps it’s titles promise, taking few elements from the original track into a minimal club track that will make dancefloors pause and bounce alike. Monty DJ’s Transformation Dub is a much less minimalistic approach, stacking layers of percussion on top of each other, shifting form constantly.
