Uusi Aika is a fresh new ensemble from Finland. Their self-titled debut album will be released by We Jazz Records on 25 November 2022. The band's music could be described as introspective and meditative, but that's only a part of the story. The instrumentation is acoustic and their sound organic to the bone, but the music's slowly unfolding character brings to mind some deep abstract electronic music or experimental dub explorations at times. That is, there's power just under the surface, just beautifully out of focus.
Originally released in 2012, the second album by the São Paulo-born composer Rodrigo Campos marks a turning point in both lyrical and aesthetic inspiration. “Bahia Fantástica” is the result of the absorption of a then recent influence of soul music (especially Curtis Mayfield) and is in the middle of this path marked by an unlikely geography in the lyrical part (São Mateus, Bahia, Japan) and by an expansion of sound ( from samba to the indefinable, with a passage through black American music). The album turns ten years old in 2022 and exudes vitality. The soul reference takes on a different aroma when it passes through the filter of the composer and his band – formed by Kiko Dinucci on guitar, Marcelo Cabral on bass, Maurício Fleury on keyboards, Maurício Takara on drums and Thiago França on sax: it has Brazilian sauce, hints of afrobeat and a very particular seasoning. The lyrics bear the artist's mark: they project scenes in the listener's imagination and design the characters and environments with their own style of subjective chronicle. Bahia is both imaginary and intimate in Rodrigo Campos’s music.
The one and only official reissue of a stunning work by Moggi, better known as Piero Umiliani. “News! News! News!” (1979) was originally released in few copies on the small imprint Sound Work Shop, both label and recording studio owned by the cult maestro. Musica Per Immagini gave another chance to its eleven amazing electronic and jazz tracks played by some of the best musicians who took part in the golden age of Italian music libraries. This sought-after album is the way the composer tried to tell us what were the experimental and futuristic sounds of the old media world, especially on paper, to which he has always been drawn. The titles of the tracks refer, not surprisingly, to a series of technical terms and some tools of journalism. “News! News! News!” thus represents the 'draft' of a different story of a fascinating music without borders, not necessarily composed for documentaries or films. Simply brilliant!
After 4 years of interviews with strangers around Montreal, Elizabeth found herself with countless stories, making up a "people's history" of the city she loves so much - which she then wove into a series of 11 original songs to make up her first bilingual album: MONTRÉAL.Soulful, groovy, with a touch of electronica, the show is accompanied by a series of videos - a stylized journey of the places and people who inspired each song.MONTRÉAL is Elizabeth's most ambitious project to date, reaffirming her originality as an artist.creditsPersonnel:Vocals - Elizabeth ShepherdKeyboards / piano / samples / percussion (track 5) - Elizabeth ShepherdGuitar - Francois JalbertBass - Remi-Jean LeBlancDrums - Mark Nelson (tracks 1, 2, 7, 8, 9, 10), Rich Irwin (tracks 3, 4, 6,11)Trumpet - Jacques Kuba-Seguin (tracks 1, 2, 4, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10), Andy King (track 4, 9)Produced by Elizabeth ShepherdAll songs written, composed and arranged by Elizabeth ShepherdAll instrumental tracks recorded by Padraig Buttner-Schneirer at Studio 451, except tracks 3 & 4 recorded by James Benjamin at Breakglass Studio, and track 9 recorded by Howard Bilerman at Hotel2tango StudioAll vocal tracks recorded by John MacLean World Records Studio except track 3, recorded by James Benjamin at Breakglass StudioMixed by John MacLean at World Records StudioMastered by David Travers-Smith at Found SoundCover artwork by Gene PendonAlbum design by Johan Hultqvist (Pinwheel Music)Photography by Richmond Lam
