Spiritual Jazz 14: Private compilation on Jazzman records.

While the string of legendary independent labels, from Blue Note and Prestige to Steeplechase and Impulse! loom large in our Spiritual Jazz catalogue, our latest installment concerns the brave and innovative souls who acted 'privately', recording and releasing their music without the aid or involvement of a bona fide record company. Making a custom, private press record on your own, without the backing, status and business acumen of an established record company to help out is no mean feat, but it never really was difficult - it's just a matter of spending money - but the tricky bit, which remains to this day, is what to do exactly with a pallet load of vinyl that's just been delivered to your door?

Sales and distribution never was easy, and getting it right requires imagination, enthusiasm, dedication, hard work and a more than a little luck. Even for the professionals it's proved immensely difficult at times; perhaps that's why so many private press records remain so obscure and elusive to this day.

Herein we examine a variety of tracks from a selection of privately pressed jazz records, released in the US between 1964 and 1987. One of the most interesting things we've found while researching this album is the variety of reasons behind coming up with a self-released record. No two stories are the same; some were done purely out of altruism to further the musical direction of students, others were simply trying to make it big, albeit on their own terms. But one solid truth remains that binds together each and every selection here – the artists didn't just make their music for the fun of it, they believed in their art so much that they took whatever steps they had available to them at the time, to get their music heard.

In keeping with the DIY ethos of private pressings, each LP and CD has their covers stamped by hand, meaning no two copies are exactly alike. And as always with our Spiritual Jazz series of albums, each comes with liner notes and pics, in this case direct from the artists themselves. Jazzman - We Dig Deeper!

Jazzaggression · Gisle Røen Johansen KVELDSRAGG LP snippetsHeaven and earth are in motion with the debut album from composer and saxophonist Gisle Røen Johansen (b. 1968) an active voice on the Norwegian jazz scene since the mid-nineties. Known for his expressive tone in groups like Element and Jazzmob, Kveldsragg is the first release under his own name. The album features top players from the nordic jazz currents including members from Bushman’s Revenge and Element; Even Hermansen on guitars, Rune Nergaard on Electric Bass and Ingebrigt Håker Flaten on Acoustic Bass and ECM signed Gard Nilssen on drums. With special guests Bob Hoffnar on pedal steel, wordless vocals by Mona Julsrud and vocals, lyrics by Harald Tusberg Jr.The melodic tour-de-force of Kveldsragg that occupies the whole first side showcases Johansen’s post-bop background, in a multi-layered harmonical approach. While the B-side Morrasol is a new dawn, the album finishes with the haunting and beautiful voice of Harald Tusberg Jr. who’s lyrical tribute to the deciesed fellow musicianJon Klette will leave you mesmerized.
Remont Pomp (repair of pumps) is a band playing ethnic, avant-garde and improvised music, which was founded in 2003 at the Polish Association for People with Intellectual Disabilities Koło in Gdańsk, created by the association's charges. The band's inspiration is ethnic music with an emphasis on the richness of African music. Remont Pomp also discovers the space of experimental music by playing unusual instruments and objects not usually associated with music. The band uses a variety of instruments, starting from ethnic percussion instruments, i.e. djembe, balafon, kalimbas, log drum, through melodic instruments: metallophone, chromatic bells, tang drum, and ending with objects such as glasses, bottles, bowls, jugs or barrels.Remont Pomp has released three albums so far. The first one entitled "Golden Platinum" released in 2012 was recorded with Mikołaj Trzaska and Mike Majkowski. The next album entitled "Pomp Power" was recorded by the band with Mikołaj Trzaska, it was released in December 2016 by kilogram records. At the end of 2022, the band recorded the third album "Sam Jest Pompa Vol.1" with Mikołaj Trzaska (saxophone, clarinet) and Adam Żuchowski (double bass) and as the title says, at least one more part from this recording session will be released later. Thanks to these meetings, the band's music on the albums gained a more free jazz, improvised character. This is the second part of the session "Sam jesteś pompa" ("You are the pump yourself") - on 180g vinyl incl. downloadcode. The album "You are the pump yourself vol.2" was recorded with the participation of Mikołaj Trzaska (saxophones, clarinet) and Adam Żuchowski (double bass).
