'Miss Cheryll' is midtempo Brazilian disco-jazz-funk at it’s finest, from the masters Banda Black Rio. Bass, synths, horns, drums, cuica and soulful vocals – textbook 80’s Rio vibes. Originally released on the Saci Pererê LP in 1980. The full length version was released on 12” in the UK in the same year and became a classic on the ‘Rare Groove’ scene.'Melô Do Tagarela' in the words of the one and only DJ Nuts: “Some people say that the first rap song from Brazil is ‘Melo do Tagarela’”. Recorded in 1980 by the famous Brazilian actor Miele, this is the instrumental version of his take on Sugarhill Gang’s ’Rappers Delight’.
Kamal Keila’s album is the first in a series of releases covering the Sudanese jazz scene on Habibi Funk. Be on the lookout for albums by The Scorpions and Sharhabeel coming soon.
Deeper Roots by Roots
We welcome Ed Longo and his studio project The Applied Arts Ensemble debut on Early Sounds with “The Other Fantasy”, the result of many recording sessions that took place in different places around Europe with an array of musicians from a predominantly jazz background.Conceived with a strong jazz-funk, fusion and boogie approach, the record is conceptualized around the quest for Otherness in the schizophrenia of the digital age, and the resulting exotic dystopias which we are confronted with every day.
Private Funk-Shun were a band formed in 1984 originating from the Loughton and Tottenham areas of north east London & Essex, and featured the vocal talents of Maxeen Edman-Messam - who would later go on to find fame in the early 1990s as key street soul artist Maxeen.Originally performing under the name of Slipstream, but changing to Private Funk-Shun in 1985 after finding out another group were operating under with the same name, they toured around London & South East bringing a dedicated brit-funk following with them. Despite writing approximately 20 original tracks in their time, this self-released two-track 7" from 1986 was their only official output and has since become a certified rare groove, fetching upwards of £250 on the secondhand market.
