New Flava Volume 1 is an audacious project birthed in Austin Aggrey-Odoom's brain in the Spring of 1995. Austin, being a devoted Christian as well as a massive music fan, was a regular at different churches across the London Area during the mid-90's. He then connected with many young aspiring Gospel/Soul/R&B singers and had the idea to produce a Gospel album that could appeal to a younger crowd, mixing US R&B influences, to create a new kind of Christian R&B that could have radio potential, while showcasing U.K.'s underground Soul talents from the Gospel community. His love of God and passion for music would finally merge into this hybrid compilation project called New Flava Volume 1.
I Get My Funk by Sam I Am Montolla
Originally released in 1983, this 12’’ from French-Haitian saxophone player Ulysse became cult – and extremely rare – within the French boogie niche. Both tracks wonderfully succeed in mixing political statements with dance-floor delights.Boogie-pop track “Naïma” seems to be a love song at first, but actually says the impossible resilience of a woman who has grown up in war.The heavy digital reggae song “Tiers Monde” warns us about the abandonment of Third World children. This maxi single, where each track is instantly followed by its instrumental version for greater DJ use, is an authentic snapshot of the Paris mixed club scene of the 1980s. Really hard to find for a very long time, it’s a great pleasure for Stima Records to make this music available again, in order to reach a well deserved new audience nearly 40 years later!
Astigmatic Records continue their interest in legendary Polish conductor, composer and arranger, Henryk Debich, whose music made the Polish Radio and Television Orchestra famous all over the world. From digging through the Radio Lódz archives, these nice gems were picked from from the golden era of 1974 to 1977 - also the time when one of the greatest examples of Polish jazz-funk was recorded: the highly collectable 'String Beat' album. This album is loaded with funk, drama and mood, played out though heavy drum breaks and rousing brass/string sections; Debich's orchestra effortlessly manoeuvred between funk and disco, touching on illustrative music and jazz.
